  • 2013 Cadillac ATS 2.0 Turbo Premium

HID Kit
The all-new 2013 Cadillac ATS compact luxury sport sedan is Cadillac’s challenge of superiority in the world’s most significant luxury car segment.  Developed on an all-new, lightweight rear-drive architecture, the ATS reflects a new expression of Cadillac’s Art & Science execution philosophy, centered on a foundation of superb driving dynamics and mass efficiency.  It is the most agile and lightweight Cadillac, with one of the lowest curb weights in the segment-less than 3,400 pounds.  This new Cadillac combines the highest state of luxury, innovative high-technology and safety systems with superb high-performance dynamics.
The ATS’s superb attributes starts with the unique styling.  It interprets Cadillac’s Art & Science design language in a new proportion, tailoring the signature styling and refinement cues for the most compact Cadillac while upholding-and-advancing the exemplary attention to detail and technological elements for which the Cadillac brand is now known.  A long 109.3 inch wheelbase and wide 59.9-front/60.9 inch-rear tracks are the cornerstones of the ATS’s firmly planted stance, which is enhanced further with short overhangs and taut sheet metal that appears to wrap tightly around the Premium’s 18X8 inch front and 18X9 inch rear wheels and tires.
Bold vertical light elements-HID headlamps with Adaptive Forward Lighting including new LED front signature lighting detail-as well as LED door handles and active grille shutters lend technologically advanced style and function to the ATS.  The grille shutters close at highway speeds to reduce aerodynamic drag and enhance fuel economy.  The front fascia of the all-new ATS is highlighted with the signature Cadillac grille now with midnight chrome accents.  Down below is a wide air-intake for the turbo’s intercooler surrounded by a chrome strip which also features a spoiler and flat bottom plate to keep the front well planted at high speeds.
The silhouette shows steeply raked windshield A-pillars, flared fenders, aerodynamically styled side mirrors, pull-out door handles, swept-back B-pillars, narrow windows surrounded by a thick chrome strip, a scallop at the bottom of the doors, deep side extensions and a flat roof with a fastback styled rear window.  At the rear are large vertical LED taillights, V-shaped spoiler at the end of the trunk lid, the Cadillac wreath just below, and a chrome strip with Cadillac stenciled at the right side.  Below the rear bumper is a diffuser to manage rear airflow and two polished stainless steel exhaust tips.  It is a look that is modern, aggressive and luxurious as only Cadillac can deliver.  Keeping the aerodynamic drag to a superb 0.299 are underbody aerodynamic shields that help smooth airflow.
Motivating the all-new ATS are three engines starting with a standard 2.5 liter four-cylinder making 202hp and 191lb.ft. of torque, a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder and the 3.6 liter V6 making 321hp and 275lb.ft. of torque that is available only for North America.
Proportion and balance are on the ATS’s side, with a low curb weight of just 3,373 pounds and power-dense powertrains that are also highlighted to achieve 50/50 weight distribution and a great power-to-weight ratio.  They complement wide front and rear tracks-59.5 front and 60.9 inch rear-for a lower center of gravity that promotes great stability and a neutral feel when attaching curving roads.  Putting it through its paces it feels lighter than the stated curb weight.  Furthermore, low vehicle mass and optimal brake sizes are expected to give the ATS braking performance that is among the best in the segment, with Brembo brakes fitted to the 2.0 liter turbo and 3.6 liter engine, the ATS stops from 60mph to 0 in about 129 feet. More information about the program is available on the web site at www.hmhid.com.

  • Businesses are urged to consider LEDs

There was a huge increase in installations of feed-in tariff-linked solar PV systems in Britain during June 2013. 64.4MW of PV were installed over a four-week period from 3 June to 30 June, according to figures supplied by Decc.
That is over double the 30.7 MW installed over the previous four-week period.
As prices have come down, the number of installations has increased throughout 2013, with 215MW installed in the first six months of the year.
Even so, there is no denying that the upfront investment is high. For those in charge of commercial and domestic environments, there is a wide choice of much easier ways to reduce a carbon footprint and see drastic reductions in energy bills.
According to Steven Ellwood, managing director of lighting provider BLT Direct, switching conventional lights for LEDs can provide a quicker, more reliable and higher return on investment than installing PV solar, since it is so easy and prices of these units are also tumbling.
They fell by 1% on the global market in the same month, June.
"Energy-saving lighting solutions are a much faster and more convenient way to give a home or business an eco-friendly twist," says Ellwood. "They are easy to install, they start making savings immediately, and there is not a huge initial outlay to add them to a home or commercial environment."
The vast majority of the energy-saving LED lighting solutions that are on the market nowadays have bases which are compatible with existing fittings in many buildings.
Often it is just a case of simply replacing the old bulbs or strip lights. However, it is recommended that reputable installers and brands are used, since some products now available are of poor quality.
Even 'feature lighting', such as those commonly reserved for high energy-using halogens, are available in LED fittings, reducing energy usage by around four-fifths or 80%.
Although more expensive, LEDs can pay for themselves through the energy saved within six to nine months.
These bulbs also have much longer lifespans, meaning that once installed, they immediately begin to save money and contribute towards helping the environment for many years at any time of the day or night, says Ellwood.
Moreover, he adds that they also make a good companion to solar panels, since they reduce overall electricity requirements, meaning that the electricity from the panels will go further.
The San Diego-based business provides complete LED lighting systems for any application. Its assortment includes indoor items like under cabinet lighting and LED strip lights, and outdoor products like landscape lighting and outdoor fixtures, along with all suitable accessories, dimmers, controllers, power supplies and other components. Inventory and product recommendations for specific projects are based on in-house testing and staff experience, the company said.
"Specialty Electronics Nationwide is pleased to welcome Environmental Lights to our vendor community," said executive director Jeannette Howe.
Environmental Lights' sales manager Jordan Brooks added that the company "is honored to be a part of the Nationwide Marketing Group" and is "looking forward to providing SEN and traditional Nationwide members with high-quality LED lighting systems."

  • Indi Go lights it up downtown

After hearing people say they couldn't find the Indi Go Artist Co-op, Jim Barham decided to do something about it.
He had its facade at 9 E. University Ave., C, lit up. Big time. With indigo blue LED lights.
SeanMurphyLIGHTS, which designed the lighting for the storefront, had the blue LED fixtures custom-made for the facade as well as a warm white LED fixture for the steel beam and decorative cast-iron rosettes that cross the middle of the facade.
The lights are set to an astronomical time clock, meaning they turn on at sunset year-round.
"They turn off at 3 a.m. so all the folks coming home from their night out have an opportunity to see it," Murphy said.

  • Discreet and easier on the pocket

LED Fog Lamp
You know the Skoda Octavia vRS. It's the car you dread to see in your rear view if you're making progress a bit enthusiastically on the motorway.
The police buy them because they're subtle, fast, reliable and affordable; four attributes that work well with private buyers too.
The latest model's bigger and plusher than ever and the petrol version still gets to 60mph in 6.5 seconds and tops out at 154mph.
Of course, you want to know how quick the VRS is. I did. So, being completely useless at suspense, here's the detail.
The 2.0-litre TSI petrol driving through a six-speed manual gearbox will punt the Octavia vRS to 62mph in only 6.5 seconds. The maximum speed is a heady 154 mph, making it a fairly academic four miles an hour faster than the second generation Octavia vRS. Plump instead for the diesel engine and you're looking at 7.8 seconds to 62mph and a top speed of 144mph. The diesel also gets a six-speed manual as standard but both models can be specified with a DSG dual clutch transmission if you have a lazy left leg.
Firmer suspension has been fitted to improve body control, as this latest generation Octavia is a significantly bigger car than its predecessor.
The hatch's ride height has been lowered by 12mm compared to the standard Octavia, with the Octavia vRS estate getting a 13mm drop.
The design features a heavily revised multi-link axle, as well as an electronic differential lock XDS integrated into the electronic stability control (ESC). This function improves the traction of the wheels and reduces the tendency to understeer in fast cornering. Electro-mechanical progressive steering provides accuracy and fast responses.
Available in either hatch or estate guise, the Octavia vRS features a front grille with honeycomb air intakes, a unique front bumper and LED Fog Lamp as well as bi-xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights. Other highlights include the red-lacquered brake calipers and a choice of 17, 18 or 19in alloy wheels. You'll get the best ride quality on the standard 17in Dorado alloys, with their 45-series tyre profile.
Step up to the 18in rims and that tyre profile drops to 40 series, so you'll find B-roads a bit more garrulous.
The Skoda Octavia vRS does nothing particularly radical – but then it doesn't need to. It has established a profitable niche for itself in offering a model that's presentable, rapid, discreet and which won't break the bank. Buying a quick car is no longer the no-brainer decision it once was, especially when the budgetary constraints of a growing family look likely to stymie your plans.
The vRS offers all the solid common sense of the Skoda brand with more than enough about it to reassure anyone that they're not on the fast track to pipe and slippersville.
Downsides? There aren't really too many to mention. If you're the sort of person who'll feel the irresistible draw of the Volkswagen or Audi brands, you probably won't give the less overtly slick Octavia the time of day. Still, that just leaves the vRS as a potential winner for anyone who doesn't feel the need for a more prestige badge.
When the outside lane of the motorway clears like Moses parting the Red Sea before you, you'll probably realise it was money well spent.

  • The New Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2013

People all over the world can recognise a Mercedes-Benz straight away. The classic Mercedes face runs like a golden thread through the brand’s history. The features of the style-defining front design are both simple and complex, especially in the S-Class: it is strong in character and unmistakable, and instead of following fads it exudes confidence and status. An alpha leader, dynamic yet not aggressive, sophisticated yet not fancy.
To underline the effortless superiority of the new S-Class, and its claim to leadership, the radiator grille is now larger, upright and distinctly three-dimensional in design. The four louvres taper outwards and do not touch the chrome frame. Instead of diamond-shaped perforations, the lower air intake now features tiny louvres in high-gloss black, which follow the shape of the grille. The front-end design is completed by a chrome strip on the lower part of the bumper.
The headlamps have clearly defined contours. In the case of the dynamic LED High Performance headlamps with Intelligent Light System (optional), the indicators, side lights and daytime running lamps are arranged behind the lens so that the brand’s hallmark “torch” is immediately recognisable both day and night. The Mercedes-Benz lettering in the angel eyes is illuminated.
The greater need for passive and active pedestrian protection has likewise been taken into account in the front design. The additionally required crash gaps have been ideally configured to lend the front end greater presence and a more dominant feel.
With its long bonnet, flowing, domed roof line and gently slanting rear end, the new S-Class has classic saloon proportions. The size and space have been fashioned in such a way that the S-Class appears prestigious, and the powerful roof line is also in keeping with the car’s sporty coupe-style intentions.
A character line descending discreetly from front to rear – the brand’s hallmark “Dropping Line” – elegantly structures the side wall and generates additional dynamism even when the car is at a standstill. The subtly created convex-concave effect of the entire flank gives rise to an extremely powerful and elongated car body that demonstrates both excitement and calm. The pronounced shoulder above the rear wheel adds further emphasis to the car’s athletic character.
Every detail and each of the detachable body parts have been stylistically optimised. The exterior mirrors, for instance, have a new, more dynamic form, while the precisely shaped exterior handles emphasise the body’s distinctive lines.
The positively exaggerated surfaces and lines of the side wall on the new S-Class generate excitement as they flow into the rear end.As well as being elegant, the slightly slanting form has aerodynamic advantages.
Horizontal lines running from the boot lid to the bumper emphasise the car’s width when viewed from the rear. The hallmark signature of the Mercedes-Benz designers can also be seen in the rear windscreen, which cuts into the C-pillars. The upper area of the glass is rounded to give it a coupe-like character. The three-dimensional chrome insert on the boot lid adds a new dimension in high-quality design.
The real highlights are the new-style tail lights which are completely encased by the car body and, thanks to this integrated styling, complete the design right down to the last detail. Their meticulously crafted inner workings reflect the current state of the art. Featuring three horizontally arranged fibre-optic cables, the design echoes the hallmark Mercedes meander and so ties in seamlessly with the long line of preceding models. The combination of attention to detail with exacting technical requirements is apparent in both the night and the day design. The rear fog lamp is housed in the centre of the bumper, while the reflectors are elegantly integrated on the left and right sides.

  • Community Light Centres will power education

The Chief Executive Officer of Philips Africa, JJ van Dongen has told citifmonline that he is optimistic that the company’s ‘Community Light Centres’ project will go a long way to transform education and healthcare provision in Ghana.
Speaking during the Accra stop of the company’s fourth consecutive pan-African Cape Town to Cairo Roadshow, JJ van Dongen noted: “In terms of light centres where we announced earlier this year 100 light centres; now these are areas of about 1000 square meters where we use solar lighting impact sports, market places and children's education. 26 of those centres will be based here in Ghana.”
The Community Light Centres is an initiative being undertaken in partnership with the KNVB and the Football for Water Sanitation and Hygiene program and will see the creation of areas of light for rural communities which live without electricity using efficient solar powered LED lighting.
A Philips Light Center is an area of 1000m2, or the size of a small soccer pitch is to be used for sport and other important activities such as healthcare clinics, education and evening classes, social events and commercial activities. A Light Center extends the day by enabling communal life after dark. It creates a safe area and supports sanitation programs.

  • WigWag Kicks Off Home Automation Campaign

Startup WigWag aims to kickstart a new do-it-yourselfer fad in home automation. The Austin-based company announced in June recently surpassed its modest funding goals on Kickstarter, but it has a long way to go in sparking a firestorm in the emerging Internet of Things.
Plenty of home automation kits since the days of X-10 have had their brief day in the sun. Most lead quiet, limited lives confined to the dusty back shelves of hardware stores. Whether WigWag escapes a fate of obscurity to play a larger role in IoT remains to be seen.
WigWag makes three products targeting DIYers interested in adding intelligence to their homes: a universal sensor, a relay box, and a wireless LED Strip light. It also makes smartphone apps that can control the systems using a simple GUI or -- for the technically minded -- its underlying Javascript.
The heart of the WigWag system is its sensor block. It includes eight environmental sensors including light, motion, temperature, and humidity sensors. It has an IR blaster to set up trip wires between sensor blocks, four control features, and analog and digital expansion ports.
The company says the block, driven by four AA batteries or a USB-power link, can be used for a wide variety of traditional and novel home-control tasks, from turning on sprinklers to detecting a break-in. It provides connectivity through a relay box to a WigWag cloud service and presumably relies on WiFi.
The WigWag Glowline is an eight-foot RGB LED lighting strip capable of generating 22,000 colors. It comes with its own power supply and is presumably controlled through a sensor block.
The startup's products are compatible with Phillips Hue light bulbs and Belkin WeMo outlets. WigWag has working versions of all the products, but the cloud service is so far in an internal-only beta test. An iPhone control app is up and running, and an Android version is in development.
The company won pledges totaling nearly $90,000 from 439 supporters as of the end of June, far above its $50,000 goal. Its campaign officially ends August 18.
WigWag aims to ship a variety of development systems, including boards for integrating with Arduino and Raspberry Pi kits, starting in November. Prices range from $119 to $249.
Apparently, the startup has plenty yet to do to make its open hardware and software designs production-ready. Its app and cloud services are based on DeviceJS, an open-source runtime for executing Javascript built using Google V8 and Node.js. DeviceJS supports links to IP, 6LoWPAN, Bluetooth, Zigbee, and RS-232, in addition to Belkin WeMo and Phillips Hue products.
The WigWag hardware is based on the Contiki operating systems for 6LoWPAN. WigWag expects to provide software for the Arduino and Raspberry PI boards on Github, as well as details of its hardware designs when dev kits ship in November.
The tiny startup has considerable marketing savvy. But whether that will translate into a groundswell of interest remains to be seen.

  • Residents want better lighting

Bukit Bandaraya Residents' Association president Datuk Mumtaz Ali is also calling for the police to erect three police beat bases in the area.
"We have called for beat bases to be set up at Lorong Maarof next to the Petronas station, Jalan Jejawi park and at the Bukit Bandaraya Community Centre. The beat bases will benefit those who are going to the park, school and community centre," he said.
Mumtaz said that the association will help contribute funds for the beat bases.
"We would like to focus on community policing. We want to work together with the police to create a neighbourhood watch," he said.
Mumtaz said that City Hall should look into the lighting around their neighbourhood to prevent crime in their area.
"We hope that City Hall will soon change the light bulbs to light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, which are brighter. We would also want them to light up the back lanes," he said.
Mumtaz reiterated that City Hall should look into the maintenance of the community centre, which is frequented by many people.
"The audio system at the main hall is not working properly and plug points in most areas of the centre are also not working. We want City Hall to look into the cracks at the tennis court which have yet to be fixed," he said.
Resident Peggy Goh, 69, who lives in Jalan Kemaris, said the residents wanted the police to patrol the area more often. She said that there had been 10 break-ins since middle of last year.
"We want police to make their presence felt to deter crime here," she said.
Ann Makosinski, a high school junior in Victoria, British Columbia, was trying to think of a way of harvesting untapped energy when she was inspired to make the flashlight.
She realized that the warmth generated by the human body was an overlooked energy source.
Her project objective was to create a flashlight that ran solely off the heat of the hand.
That objective was accomplished when she discovered Peltier tiles, which produce electricity when one side of the tile is heated and the other is cooled.
Makosinski realized she could use these tiles to create energy for her flashlight if she left the device hollow.
Holding the flashlight on the outside would cause the tiles to heat  up on one side while the ambient air would cool down the tile on the inside of the flashlight.
The power created by the tiles was enough to power an LED light, but it did not create enough voltage.
To troubleshoot that issue she created a circuit that would allow for transformers, upping the voltage.
It worked! The flashlight does have one issue: it works better in colder temperatures since the inside is better able to cool down comparative to the person's body heat. More information about the program is available on the web site at www.hmhid.com.

  • Evolucia to extend credit to customers

To boost its sales, Evolucia Inc. will begin offering up to 100 percent financing so customers can more easily buy its light-emitting diode products.
The company also said Wednesday that it has joined forces with Solarmax International SA, of Colombia, to take advantage of a 2012 U.S. free trade agreement with the South American country.
Through financing partners, the company hopes to increase sales by offering customers the chance to install even major new lighting systems with little or no money down.
"Cost and cash flow are often the major barriers for customers when it comes to retrofitting both interior and exterior lighting," said Evolucia chief executive Mel Interiano. "Evolucia has removed that barrier with a program designed to finance the installation of state-of-the-art, energy-efficient LED lighting and to help customers start saving dollars on day one."
Evolucia's key selling point is its patented optics system, which aims light exactly where needed. Its LED parking and roadway systems have been installed at Andrews Air Force Base, the U.S. Marine Corps' base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and at Chicago's DePaul University.
With Solarmax, meanwhile, several lighting projects are underway. They include the installation of Evolucia's newest area lighting solution, the PAL 1000, in one of the main ports in Colombia.
"We are preparing for quick market penetration and explosive growth," said Olga Lucia Giraldo, Solarmax's vice president of sales and marketing.
The Solarmax joint venture comes on the heels of several other partnerships Evolucia has entered lately.
The company has recently completed Asian, European and Australian partnership agreements and finalized a joint marketing agreement with a global lighting brand in Mexico.
"Our agreement with Solarmax opens up another important international market for us," said Carol Gutierrez, Evolucia's vice president in charge of global strategies. "This alliance also allows us to introduce our portfolio throughout the rest of South America."
The two announcements come just days after the company revealed it will move its headquarters and research operations into a larger space at Lakewood Ranch later this summer.
Evolucia's 30 employees will move by late August to the new space, a building formerly occupied by artificial diamond maker Gemesis.
The LED company moved out of offices on Cattlemen Drive late last year and has been operating in temporary quarters in Lakewood Ranch since then.
Its new offices, on Professional Parkway East, will include a customer demonstration and education area that showcases Evolucia's LED fixtures and controls.
Formerly known as Sunovia Energy Technologies, Evolucia stock is traded over the counter. In its first quarter this year, the company reported a net loss of $2.1 million on sales of $457,000. More information about the program is available on the web site at www.hmhid.com.

  • Forever LED Light

Energy Saving Solutions USA’s Founder & CEO Peter Stein is an admitted news junkie, but it seems he’s been an especially keen observer of late.
As his Miami-based company prepares to launch its most important product to date – the Forever LED Light – Stein has dutifully taken note of the many cities around the country who are converting to LED lights in an effort to save money and the environment.
“It appears that every day there are a handful of cities, towns and municipalities around the United States who are making the move to LEDs,” said Stein, who oversees a fast growing company that designs, manufactures and sells LED lighting to commercial properties at zero upfront cost.
“With our soon-to-be launched Forever LED Light, we are now able to offer to cities and municipalities the first-ever full line of LEDs – including roadway lighting fixtures that are guaranteed for life.”
